Walker Proposal Gets Run Over By A Bike!

6 04 2008

Last night I was thinking on how I could write a story about the continuing saga on the Walker/Andreychuk proposal without getting into the Recreation Advisory Board meeting this last Thursday. I am absolutely barred from discussing what happened in that meeting, by law, because the Supervisor called it as an Executive Session. Actually, I’m not sure that he can call it as an Executive Session but I’m really not in the mood to quibble about it.

So the only way to write this story is by talking around the RAB meeting. So, here goes a shot at it. Regardless of what happened in the RAB meeting the Town Council is not bound to follow any decision of the RAB. The RAB is an advisory board only. With that said it’s my feeling that Supervisor Walters will be pushing the Walker proposal forward. In order for the town to move forward, regardless of the approval or disapproval of the RAB, the town must garner support from the NYS Legislature to get a Home Rule Exemption to lease manage the facility.

That was reported in one of my last two articles about this proposal. So how does that happen? Well, Steve Walters must first get approval of the majority of the Town Council to go forth to Albany. I believe that is a lock at this point. Next he will have to get a State Assemblyman or State Senator to put their name on the request for a Home Rule Exemption. Most likely is Senator Volker or Assemblyman Quinn. Their isn’t a Democrat out there who will touch this issue right now. I’ll explain that comment in a moment.

If and when the request is brought up to the Senate or Assembly floor then a majority vote will be needed to allow this to go forward. Until all that happens this project goes no-where. Now here is the part that I think is very interesting. I believe town politics will kill this project altogether until Steven Walters gets himself re-elected and here is why.

Can anyone say BIKE PATH? When Steve Walters and the Conservative members of the town board killed the bike path they killed Walkers proposal. Here are the politics as I see it.

Joan Kesner is probably the most influential member in state affairs that our Town Council has. She has been Chief of Staff for State Senator Stachowski for something like 20+ years and she knows Albany inside-out. If she’s not the most influential then it would Kathy Hochul, who just happens to be Joan Kesner’s best friend. So either way Steve Walters is screwed.

When Steve Walters nixed the Bike Path he alienated Kesner and Hochul. They will not help him get a Home Rule Exemption pushed through the Assembly until after he gets re-elected. I just don’t see it happening. Both Kesner and Hochul would be needed in this endeavor because the Democrats control the State Assembly. In order for the majority to give Walters the OK in the Assembly it would mean some local Democrats crossing the isle and giving the OK, that will not happen now that Joan’s five year Bike Path project is gone. Sorry hockey parents, you will have wait two more years for this project to get done and then hope their is still interest from Walker and his financial team.

Never-the-less, I expect Steven Walters, Tom Best and Kevin Smardz to push this forward and try to make an issue of this. If they do it right they could turn it around on the Democrats as an election issue next year.

Ford,

Did you ever think that your lack of tactfulness and decency in some of your comments about Hochul recently on this blog might come into play in some of her feelings toward issues that you and Walters support? True leaders don’t write the way you did. You’ve obviously been given some sort of leadership position in Recreation matters, so please start acting like a leader, not someone who publishes slanderous remarks about a person just because you think it’s funny.

How is giving Jeff Walker a 10 million dollar business loan making our community better? The Town of Hamburg going into debt by 10 million $ is not a good idea.

I don’t get it. You want the Town to take on the risk of a $10m dollar private project- which will be controlled by private individuals- which will be used only by hockey players and skaters but don’t want to spend an extra $100k for a bike path that can be used by so many?

What’s up with that?

I hope you’re not saying I opposed the Bike Path. I really could care less. I just reported what I watched happen. The residents of Hoover Beach should have the final say since this project is right in the middle of their neighborhood.

Anonymous,

You are a TRUE Idiot. Thousands of kids and young adults and even adults will be using this year around. Ice and I heard a soccer field Wow. What an idea. I support both, but I would choose something everyone, one way or another can use, the Sports Facility. Listen it happens all the time Government getting cheap money and helping business men out. This is a huge dealfor the southtowns and if it can happen in Hamburg then….Alot of people will be coming from ALL over the place to our Town…Money ..can you say Reveneue for our business that try hard each and every day to make ends meet….this will help huge…Bike path wont bring in out side visitors that will spend money in our local business.

It is not only about putting up a sports facility for a private person to run. You need to look at the BIG PICTURE. This will be huge and if a business man wants to support this deal with a money backed guarantee then more power to our leaders. This facility will be built with interest FREE money and guaranted to be paid for 1/3 of the life of the loan and Most Likely 100% of the loan because this will not go bad for these investors. Our Government is not here to run a business, let someone else do the work and take the risk of loosing a boat load of money.

OK Hamburg Resident/William, I know you are Jeff Walker. You have left numerous comments that track back to Jeff’s e-mail address and I even tracked one back to Mexico when Jeff was down their for his vacation. So seeing that you are Jeff Walker I am insisting that you use your real name or don’t bother posting here any more. People are more than interested in debating this issue with you Jeff, but stop calling them idiots because they have an opposing view.

I think the supervisor will push this issue through to the next step in the process but it will get squashed in the State Legislature. Not because of the proposal but because of just plain stupid politics. It’s the reality and I think you should brace yourself for the big screw job that’s coming. It’s not your fault but politics will stop this proposal dead in its track, thank the bike path for that.

I give you a ton of credit for stepping up and putting yourself out their to try and build something this town can be proud of. Stick it out for another year and a half and this will get approved. I don’t see that happening until then. The politics is going to kill it for right now. Well Hell, I’ve been wrong before but I think what I’m saying now is 95% certain.

Jeff - What business experience do you have to handle a 10 million dollar project? What is Dave Andreychuk’s role? Why hasn’t he been at any of the meetings?

So “William” explain to me why your IP tracks back to Mexico and Jeff Walker just happens to be on vacation in Mexico? Why would anyone else from Mexico bother to post here? We’re not idiots you know.

This comes up on the basic IP search that has the IP logged in from your post. I’m not spending the 5 bucks for an advanced IP search to get your home e-mail address again. Quit lying to the people here. And by the way, welcome home from Mexico.

Hamburg First, everyone here hides and does not talk the truth. Why can’t this Bill do the same? Come on people, do you really think Blog is anything other then another form of gossip & rumor ville. The only thing different is that mainly men are on this site. If you people really want to know the truth on any topic just ask the right people, the ones that are involved.
