Hamburg Councilman Tom Best resigned his elected position effective today, Sunday 8th of March 2009.
It is expected that Tom will be appointed as Highway Superintendent tomorrow evening at the Town Council meeting. This move is considered strategic by by the Democratic Party. I still don’t understand why the Republican Party would ever consider such a move this early in a huge election year.
By endorsing Tom for Highway Superintendent the Democratic party ensures that Tom Best’s influence will be nullified in the upcoming Town Supervisors race. It’s my opinion that Tom will effectively be unwilling to publicly support anyone for that seat since both parties will have supported him for Superintendent.
That means the Republicans will have to make some really nifty moves to gain control of the Town Council before the election this year. Otherwise nothing will get done politically until January.
It’s my opinion that the RP should have kept Tom in his Council seat until the election in November. It is now expected that Best will have a cross endorsement from both the Republicans and Democrats for Highway Superintendent in November. Taking Tom out of the political picture is a huge victory for the Democrats.
One thing is for sure, no more free passes for those who work in the Highway Department. Tom is pledging to make everyone work a full day for a full days pay.
One final note: It is NYS law that a person must resign an elected position 24 hours prior to being appointed to another position. Tom also has 48 hours to rescind his resignation as per NYS Law. So if there is any double cross on the Superintendent appointment then Tom can be right back on the Town Council by Tuesday.
Can you say double dipping. I can.
hear any names from the dems or gop on who might run for the three spots on the board?
Gugliuzza/kowalski for the dems
I heard Gugliuzza was not running and Judge Gorman’s son was running. Any news on any republicans?
Where does the information come from that the highway department workers do not work a full shift? Sounds like sour grapes to me…
How about full time paid positions that don’t work full time ??????
There are many rocks to be turned over. I have sour grapes because of the taxes we pay. Remember when Congress wasn’t a full time job ? Congressman Radwan only spent 3 or 4 months in Washington in the 50’s. He returned home to his district and his private law practice afterwards. Now special interests/lobbies and the fox guarding the chicken coop costs us. This is acedemics of course, but we should not loose sight of the fundementals; like they want us to.
Phil,
What does Congress have to do with the Highway Department?
I apologize for looking at the big picture ! I should keep focused on little stuff.
I believe Ted Casey will also be running for Hamburg Town Council for the Democratic party.
Ted Casey will be running for Hamburg Town Council. I believe he is on the Hamburg Town Safety Committee. His website is http://www.caseyforhamburg.com.
